You need to make sure your site is mobile friendly. Sites that aren’t constantly updated could have broken links or content that doesn’t represent who you are or attract the clients you want to attract.

The Art of the Outdoor Headshot-from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

A corporate photoshoot doesn’t always mean taking pictures in a workplace or at an event. Sometimes, you need to get outside. Obviously this is a great way to set up some stunning backdrops for your pictures, but nature being, well, nature, you might not always find the most conducive conditions out there. That’s where a professional photographer comes in—we know a thing or two about the art of the outdoor photoshoot! Or in the case of this post, a thing or three. Let’s learn a little about the weather, the woods, and the water, and how they play into a shoot done out of doors.

The Weather

This is a big reason to find a professional who knows the best times of day and times of year to get good shots outside. January through March, you might luck out and get a day when it’s merely overcast, which lends itself well to photography, but you’re playing roulette with the rain and everyone’s luck runs out eventually. Needless to say, you don’t want to do a photoshoot in the rain (and I could do without it too). If you want outdoor headshots, your best bet is planning for March through October. There’ll be lots of direct sunlight, but I bring a ton of light-blocking equipment to make sure you don’t look like you’re squinting or wincing away from the sun. And if we shoot between early morning and midafternoon, there won’t be as much light in your eyes to begin with.

The Woods

Trees and greenery are a big reason to shoot outside. A woodsy background can make for some amazing shots, individual or group. But in order to take advantage of all the texture and colour a sylvan backdrop can provide, you have to make sure you’re shooting in the right conditions. Time of day and time of year are still important so the light hits the woods just right to show off all those colours, and so the details of texture look great.

The Water

Shooting near a stream, river or the lake at Woodbine Beach can provide beautiful images, and a lot of people think the ocean makes an even better backdrop. After all, it’s the ocean! And we have so much of it here. Problem is, the ocean doesn’t really look like you might think. It’s usually a big boring field of white unless you’re shooting in Hawaii, really, where it’s an amazing blue. (Now, if you want me to go to Hawaii for a shoot, I’ll take one for the team!)

He’s a partner in Alpine Investors, and was there from the beginning as a founder. What you might not know is that that was way back when he was still living in residence at Stanford!

That was more than twenty years ago. He finished his degree and went on to get another one, helping to run Alpine the whole time.

Graham didn’t always work in investing and venture capital, though. So how did he get his start? Believe it or not… mowing lawns. Never underestimate the importance of landscaping!

So, you’ve found your way to my site. Maybe you learned something cool while you were here. You’re interested in booking a photoshoot. But what happens during one? Not to mention before and after? This week’s post is a little primer on how the process works for you, and answers the top eleven (yes, you get a bonus question!) frequently asked questions about how a photoshoot actually works.

How do I book a shoot?

It’s easy! You can email me, or you can call to reserve a date and chat about your shoot. I’ll send you over an estimate and an agreement for your approval. Once a retainer and signed paperwork comes through, the date is officially yours! You can pay by cheque, credit card or direct bank transfer. Full payment is due at the end of your shoot. (Please note that no post-production work can commence until final payment is received.)

What is a portrait session like?

My team and I will come to your office and load in our lighting and backgrounds, roughly 1.5-2 hours before the first person is to be photographed. Upon each person's arrival to the set, my team and I will go over your team's vision, then start in on photography—we’ll capture as many images as you desire, then immediately make selections for post production. How long will a photoshoot take?

The minimum time I require for an event photoshoot is three hours. I'll arrive 15 minutes prior to my scheduled shoot time to set up my equipment and check in with you, then 45 minutes prior to doors opening I'll photograph decor and ambiance. After that, I’ll cover the big event following your timeline and capturing all important people.

How much post-production do you do on headshots vs. events?

I provide three levels of post-production. Level 1 is included for all shoots, and involves correcting white balance, brightness and contrast, saturation adjustments, and minor touch-ups like skin blemishes, lint on clothing, or tiny hair fly-aways. Levels 2 and 3 are more complex and intensive, and include alterations like teeth whitening, wrinkle reduction and some figure alterations. All post-production for events is global across images and includes white balance, brightness, contrast, saturation and noise reduction. Each image will be adjusted individually but this does not include touch-ups similar to what I do for headshots.

How long until I get my photos?

Not that long! Post-production typically takes 15 business days. I can shorten this if you really need the process rushed. Once I’m done you’ll receive an email from which you can download all your images.

Do you travel for shoots?

Absolutely! I mainly travel within the San Francisco Bay area, as well as the United States more generally.

How much room do I need to have a studio set up at my office?

I require a minimum of 10’ ceilings and a room of 15’ by 15’ without any furniture that can’t be moved.

What if I don’t have space at my office for a shoot?

No problem! I have a studio in San Francisco with free street parking. Plus, it’s accessible by BART and MUNI.

What about team photos?

You got it, let’s photograph your whole team! Just let me know how many people that is. Team photos are a piece of cake.

What about hair and makeup?

One of my fabulous lighting and digital assistants will be on call to help with any fly-aways, shine, or de-linting. But! They are not professional hair or makeup artists. But I’m happy to recommend some wonderful people who can visit the set for that.

Bonus question!

But what if I don’t like having my picture taken?

Not to worry. I make the whole process easy, comfortable and fun, even for the camera-shy. I've been photographing portraits professionally for 17 years and I can connect with everyone in the company from the CEO to the engineer on their first day.

Do you know the New Zealand All Blacks? They’re Aotearoa’s own national rugby team, and facing these intense athletes on the field never makes for an easy match—just look at their win/loss record. But catch them off the field, and they’re sweet as pie! Check them out here as they meet Vista Equity Partners for a chat about their competitive work ethic.

Before playing a game, the All Blacks open with a haka, a traditional Māori dance meant as a challenge to the opposing team. This dance has been part of the team’s opening ceremonies for over a century and is often a highlight of a game with them, for good reason! It’s so popular among Kiwi sports fans and athletes that other teams have picked it up too.

When you see this legendary team at a game it’s not likely they’ll slow down for long, but when you’re doing corporate event photography, sometimes you’re lucky enough to find them standing still. Maybe a bit of their winning style will rub off?

Freshbooks visits San Francisco from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

FreshBooks is the source of the eponymous cloud-based accounting software, and they also know how to put on an event! I worked with the amazing Paco Arizmendi to cover one for them in San Francisco. It was an educational and enjoyable experience, but it will be forever remembered as that time when FreshBooks brought a taco truck into Dogpatch Studios.

FreshBooks got its start in my hometown of Toronto, when now-CEO Mike McDerment saved over an invoice (argh!) and decided existing office software wasn’t up to the job. Over the years, it’s seen explosive growth, starting from its first HQ in Mike’s parents’ basement to end up in its current digs in west-end Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood, strategically located near all manner of delicious food. Of course, nothing stops them from having the food come to them...

This is the event space at Dogpatch Studios in San Francisco, which FreshBooks chose for a local event. As you can see, this is quite the space for event photography! (As you’ll also see, they’ve got some truck-sized doors.) Three speakers explained how FreshBooks’s platform works for them in the small-business world to a high-energy crowd motivated to learn more about how this software and service could help them with their own businesses. There’s nothing like a keen audience.

And yes, they had a taco truck drive into the building and park in the event space. They really did. It’s hard to top that! This was an event I was happy to attend, and the photos show what a great time everyone had.

You might remember [a recent post] about why you need a professional photographer and not just a copy of Photoshop. But did you know that, in the hands of professionals, image editing software can be a valuable tool for supplementing their skills? It’s time to learn a little about [what Photoshop can do.] You’ll see that when used by a pro, it does many useful things: Make Good Shots Better, Improve Efficiency, and Complement Digital Photography.

1. Make Good Shots Better

Image editors act like a force multiplier when it’s a pro using them. While they can’t fix a low-quality image, they can make a high-quality image even better. This works for one picture, of course, but when used as a production tool on many images, it increases the overall quality of the whole bunch—so your pro photographer will be providing you an even better product!

2. Improve Efficiency

Related to making good shots better, image editing software can help a photographer do this at scale, which means that your pro can give you even more useful images from your event to choose from. This boost in efficiency means more bang for your buck! That’s a lot of headshots. Efficient post-production translates to better value for a high-quality product, and better branding for you.

3. Complement Digital Photography

The digital format is powerful, but its raw output needs processing, and only a professional will have the skill and knowledge to do that. Digital photography opened up a new world of what’s possible, but image editors supplement that so your pro photographer can get you shots that weren’t possible before. But none of it is possible unless you get the right shots in the first place, and that’s how you know to go with a pro.

Better images, more of them, and things you can’t do with a camera alone—that’s what Photoshop can do! But it can only do it if you’ve got the right expert using it to its full effect. Fortunately, you’re in the right place to find one.

Salesforce and JR at San Francisco City Hall from a top San Francisco Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

On a beautiful fall night last September, I was lucky enough to do a unique event shoot with Salesforce and JR the French Artist at San Francisco City Hall. But this was no ordinary feat of event photography. After all, it’s not often that I have to get hoisted in a crane to do my job! Keep scrolling to check out some of the incredible images from that night, and I’ll tell you the story of how it all came together.

The Moon peeks out over an illuminated City Hall in this shot that shows you the full glory of what a well-crafted wall projection can do. Marc Benioff funded the effort to get the Standing March installation projected on City Hall, and I was commissioned to document the results for Salesforce. Now, daytime photography is already an intricate art, but night photography is a different beast entirely! Long exposures keep you on location for hours, and photographing a projected image means triple-checking everything to make sure the image is sharp. If you think this is cool, wait until you see what comes next.

Here’s a shot I got from closer up that really highlights the detail in the projection and how good it looks on masonry of this colour and texture. With tour buses pulling up every time we turned around, I had to get good at politely asking them to move and getting in my shots in a hurry! It takes three separate projectors working in sync to make the projected image this bright, and a projector can’t work with a bus parked in front of it. I’m not as tall as City Hall, so this shot is on an angle looking up at the columns atop the main entrance. But wait…

Sometimes, to get the shot you want, you have to get taller. I’m talking the standing-in-a-cherry-picker-with-a-tripod kind of taller! The wind wasn’t calm that night, and no matter how many assurances you get that you’re perfectly safe, hanging in the sky to get your long exposure is always strange and gets your pulse racing. But when the right shot is twenty feet up, you go twenty feet up.

I’m so pleased with how this shoot turned out! The client was thrilled, and it was worth it to stay out all night painstakingly setting up each image and waiting for the projection to cycle so I could get every different projected image on record. This was a photographic feat I’m glad to have been part of, and I’m proud to have these images in my event photography repertoire.

Upward is a professional organisation for women in executive roles. They provide mentorship, networking opportunities, and skill workshops for women looking to move onward and upward in the executive world, hence the name! Upward operates out of Saratoga California, and holds events throughout the Bay Area, from fireside chats to large events like their annual dinner, which yours truly had the privilege to capture on camera.

This was a fun and engaging event, with attendees enjoying themselves throughout, happy to be there and excited about the activities available. Before the main event, there was everything from jewelry vendors to clothing shops, drinks and even makeup session available. A comedian warmed up the crowd, and the main attraction was a fireside chat.

Joining up gives executive women access to all manner of programs and other resources. Small-group mentorship and coaching, workshops on specific topics, and durable social connections are all benefits of membership. Plus, don’t the annual dinners look fun?

Achieving Work-Life Balance: How I Did it in 2018 from a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot and Event Photographer

In today’s blog, I’m coming clean. As the sole proprietor of my business, striking that beautiful work-life balance is challenging! With a young family at home and a group of professionals I’m proud to call my work family, it’s sometimes hard to make sure everyone is getting equal slices of the Liz Caruana pie ;)

The question I’m not always prepared to answer begins sometime in fall: will you be taking time off over the holidays? Any freelancer can agree that you want to make hay while the sun shines but with time as our greatest commodity, it’s precious and ultra-important to be smart about how we spend it.

This past holiday season, I planned in advance and blocked time in my calendar for my family and I. To solidify this decision, I booked plane tickets! I figured this way I wouldn’t be tempted to cut short the time I had carved out for myself to squeeze in one more shoot before the end of 2018. With tickets in hand, the plan was set in motion to visit friends and family across the pond - London and Oxford, England to be precise - as well as a stopover in my hometown of Toronto, Canada. All told, I was away for 18 days and it really gave me an opportunity to connect with old friends I seldom see, spend quality time with my family and refill my own cup. I cannot overemphasize how invaluable this is to freelancers and business owner/operators that dedicate their time around the clock to their clients and business development!

As for the trip, the usual tourist sites were stops on our list: riding the tube to Buckingham Palace followed by afternoon tea in Cinderella’s carriage (a highlight for my 3.5 year old daughter and to be honest, me too). While in London we also visited the British Museum which hosts the largest and best Egyptian exhibit. Our visit was made even better as our escort (and friend) is an actual Egyptologist (I had to google it too).  Experiencing it with her as our guide was a special treat that had my daughter asking the following day if we would be seeing the sarcophagi again!

We puddle-jumped, literally and figuratively to Oxford, where we experienced some of the fiercest rainfalls I’ve seen. England knows rain and if you’re dressed appropriately, actual puddle jumping can be quite fun.

Following that, we jet-setted to my hometown of Toronto and hit up some of my favourites, including renowned St. Urbain bagels from the St. Lawrence Market. I’m sorry to report that there’s no photographic evidence of said bagels because we devoured them so fast! Time spent with family in Toronto was bittersweet. In many regards it feels like no time has past since we last caught up in person but the growing little people serve as a reminder that time indeed, flies by.

As for work, it never truly stopped while I was away. Although I can’t physically be on site shooting, there is always work to be done. Such is the life of a freelancer and business boss lady! I can’t fully rest without keeping up with emails, always chasing that inbox zero goal or reaching out to prospective and returning clients.

Which brings me to my final thought. As I reflect back on 2018, I definitely did a lot of things right, including achieving a healthy work-life balance. I learned new tips, tricks and hacks to improve efficiency, worked with some incredibly talented individuals and fostered the client relationships that keep this ship afloat. I plan to take all of this with me into 2019 and look forward to the new working relationships that are yet to come as well as the memories to be made with my friends and family.
