So, you’ve found your way to my site. Maybe you learned something cool while you were here. You’re interested in booking a photoshoot. But what happens during one? Not to mention before and after? This week’s post is a little primer on how the process works for you, and answers the top eleven (yes, you get a bonus question!) frequently asked questions about how a photoshoot actually works.

How do I book a shoot?

It’s easy! You can email me, or you can call to reserve a date and chat about your shoot. I’ll send you over an estimate and an agreement for your approval. Once a retainer and signed paperwork comes through, the date is officially yours! You can pay by cheque, credit card or direct bank transfer. Full payment is due at the end of your shoot. (Please note that no post-production work can commence until final payment is received.)

What is a portrait session like?

My team and I will come to your office and load in our lighting and backgrounds, roughly 1.5-2 hours before the first person is to be photographed. Upon each person's arrival to the set, my team and I will go over your team's vision, then start in on photography—we’ll capture as many images as you desire, then immediately make selections for post production. How long will a photoshoot take?

The minimum time I require for an event photoshoot is three hours. I'll arrive 15 minutes prior to my scheduled shoot time to set up my equipment and check in with you, then 45 minutes prior to doors opening I'll photograph decor and ambiance. After that, I’ll cover the big event following your timeline and capturing all important people.

How much post-production do you do on headshots vs. events?

I provide three levels of post-production. Level 1 is included for all shoots, and involves correcting white balance, brightness and contrast, saturation adjustments, and minor touch-ups like skin blemishes, lint on clothing, or tiny hair fly-aways. Levels 2 and 3 are more complex and intensive, and include alterations like teeth whitening, wrinkle reduction and some figure alterations. All post-production for events is global across images and includes white balance, brightness, contrast, saturation and noise reduction. Each image will be adjusted individually but this does not include touch-ups similar to what I do for headshots.

How long until I get my photos?

Not that long! Post-production typically takes 15 business days. I can shorten this if you really need the process rushed. Once I’m done you’ll receive an email from which you can download all your images.

Do you travel for shoots?

Absolutely! I mainly travel within the San Francisco Bay area, as well as the United States more generally.

How much room do I need to have a studio set up at my office?

I require a minimum of 10’ ceilings and a room of 15’ by 15’ without any furniture that can’t be moved.

What if I don’t have space at my office for a shoot?

No problem! I have a studio in San Francisco with free street parking. Plus, it’s accessible by BART and MUNI.

What about team photos?

You got it, let’s photograph your whole team! Just let me know how many people that is. Team photos are a piece of cake.

What about hair and makeup?

One of my fabulous lighting and digital assistants will be on call to help with any fly-aways, shine, or de-linting. But! They are not professional hair or makeup artists. But I’m happy to recommend some wonderful people who can visit the set for that.

Bonus question!

But what if I don’t like having my picture taken?

Not to worry. I make the whole process easy, comfortable and fun, even for the camera-shy. I've been photographing portraits professionally for 17 years and I can connect with everyone in the company from the CEO to the engineer on their first day.

Hiring A Photo Agency vs Independent Photographer- Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

In today’s entry, I’m going to illustrate some of the common differences and misconceptions with hiring a photographer directly vs. enlisting the services of an agency.

When working with a photography agency, it’s a bit of a gamble. You can never be sure that the work they showcase is what you’ll receive as they have a rotating roster of (sometimes mediocre) photographers. These are often novice photographers looking to build their portfolios that haven’t gained significant experience to execute large scale events, corporate headshots, etc. Is this someone you want interfacing with executives at your next event? I’m all for learning and growing but there’s also a time and place.  

When working directly with a photographer, you’re certain that the work you see in their portfolio was planned, shot and edited by them. Here at Liz Caruana Photography I don’t have a big team of production assistants, location scouts, post-production editors, etc. What you see is what you get and I take great pride in each step of production. I have a name and reputation to uphold, whereas agencies can turn and burn their photographers on a whim.

An additional advantage to working directly with a photographer is that you liaise directly with the person responsible for your shoot. No middleman / middlewoman, no accounting department, no secretaries means no detail will fall through the cracks.

It’s also important to note that photographers employed by agencies aren’t often committed to their craft full time. It may be one of several side gigs which means they’re likely not up to speed on their training, equipment, etc. These photographers are compensated accordingly and there’s no transparency from the agency about the breakdown of your fees. Avoid overhead by working directly with a photographer.

Questions To Ask When Choosing a Photographer, Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

When considering a new photographer for any project, you should be focussed on more than just the look and feel of their images. Obviously, the end product is important and is often what attracts new clients however, the process should be equally weighted.

That’s why I have provided a list of questions and why they’re important to ask when considering a new supplier for your corporate headshot or event photographer.

1. When are you available? Seems like a no-brainer, but a photographer’s availability says a lot about them. If you’ve left things to the last minute (pro-tip: avoid at all costs!) and have a requirement for next week, any photographer that has immediate openings should be considered a red flag. A great photographer is usually in high demand and has a schedule booked weeks and months out. The caveat is that a great photographer is also a pro at balancing their schedule and will be honest about whether they can accommodate your request, however last minute it may be. A good rule of thumb for event photography is to start your search for photographers the minute you’ve secured your venue and dates. As for headshots, a 1-month lead time can usually be accommodated but the longer, the better.

2. How many headshots can you cover in 1 day? We’re aiming for quality over quantity and the client needs will dictate how efficient I can be. Location changes, natural elements, wardrobe changes are all things that will add to the time it takes to capture your team’s headshots. In short, there is no magic number but trust that I work efficiently once set up!

3. What is your rate? Budget is a common consideration when working with photographers. Be sure to ask whether they charge a day rate (and if so, how long their day is) or if they charge an hourly rate? When production assistants are required, is that included in the overall rate or are they to be paid separately? It’s vital to remember that with all things in life, you get what you pay for. Cost considerations for the photographer that are factored into their quote include equipment (lighting, cameras, backdrops, props, boxes, tripods & more), assistants, travel time, working time, editing time and more. Keep that in mind when reviewing quotes for photographers and remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

4. When will I receive the images? Again, the answer to this isn’t cut-and-dry but the bottom line is that I’m flexible. Be up front about your expectations and deadlines and I’ll do my best to work within those timelines. Considerations should be made for projects requiring more post-production time as well as photos delivered in multiple formats.

5. How many images will you provide? My job as your photographer is to weed through the hundreds to thousands of images I shoot and only provide you with the best. I don’t want to overwhelm you with every single frame I shoot and will exercise my professional judgement in selecting the images you see. As for a specific number, it usually works out to roughly fifty percent of what I capture, and even in that there are duplicates that are weeded out for being too similar.

Five Mistakes When Picking a Photographer – from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

So you’ve been tasked to get a photographer by your boss. Yes more often than not you need to get someone fast because photography for your upcoming headshots or event was a bit of a rush and an afterthought. Here’s how you can make sure you get the right person for the job and wow your boss and your whole company.

1. Portfolio is Random.  Look at the photographers Abilities.  Do they have the portfolio to accomplish what you need. I mean for real. Not a bunch of random galleries on their website, but do they have galleries that they can send you to show you they can deliver. If it’s headshots do are they able to photograph both men, women, to look natural as well as potentially tricky things like glasses, receding hairlines, and various skin tones.

2. Post Production is fake. Yes, as much as we hate to admit it, an older woman or man should look natural in photos and not like a blur filter has been put over their face. Make sure to look closely at portraits.

3. The backgrounds are uneven. Can you even believe I’m bringing this up? Well… any good photographer will bring a light meter to their shoot and make sure that the background is even left to right and there aren’t strange shadows. Studio work is an art. Gradients are a different thing but if there are shadows then skip that person.

4. The Shadows on the face are incorrect. Okay, now I’m getting technical, but if the subject has long shadows under the nose that drag into the lip and the side of the face is really dark, this person may have just picked up their camera yesterday. Skip them.

5. They are really inexpensive. Another tip that they may not have the correct gear to be able to provide high quality imagery for your shoot as they aren’t working with the tools to do the job. More than likely you will be paying to do a reshoot if you hire this person, or they don’t have the experience to know how to price what they’re doing. Stay away.

BONUS!!!

6. They are not a registered business. Your business needs to work with other businesses. If the person cannot provide a W9, and proof of insurance walk away, you don’t need that liability.

7. You want the triangle. Fast. Cheap. High Quality. If the person says they can do all three they are not the right person for you. It is a well known industry fact that you just can’t have it all. You can have two of the three so pick your favourite two and go for those.

For a hot minute I debated titling this entry “The Prince of Prints” because, who doesn’t love a good wordplay?! For simplicity’s sake, I stuck with the “King of Prints” but whatever royalty you identify with, the knowledge I’m dropping today is for everyone.

Putting pixels on paper can be a daunting task. You’ve gone through pre-shoot prep, I’ve taken dozens if not, hundreds of shots, pored over them in post-production and presented you with the cream of the crop. I rise to the top… sorry, I couldn’t resist the reference!

What you’re left with is deciding which images to print and where to put them. We discussed digital applications of headshots in a previous post and while that’s essential, printing your images is equally as important. Perhaps you want to create a sense of arrival in your lobby or reception area? Maybe your business has a coffee table style album full of prints of your current roster of employees? Do you include headshots on your business cards? What about your advertising channels for recruitment purposes? Maybe it’s time for a company directory refresh. Whatever the objective, images will be shot with high enough resolution that will enable you to enlarge prints to meet your needs.

A few months ago I posted a sample of portraits I shot on vibrantly colored backdrops on my Instagram account and website. As you’ll see, color was a major player that added a huge pop of personality to these portraits and worked well for my already colorful subjects.

Take a look at these same images on neutral backgrounds and you’ll quickly see the effectiveness the role of color played in this series of portraits.

Color backgrounds are not for everyone. In this particular case, these are creative types, models, actors and artists - all of whom were seeking a playful portrait to suit their style.

While I had a lot of fun shooting and editing this series, I also recognize the time and place for saturated images like these vs. something more neutral or reserved.

If you’re not ready to dive into the deep end of the color wheel during your shoot, consider the colors of your brand or organization and how we can work subtle hints of that scheme into our shoot. Perhaps utilizing collateral or props that are on-brand is something you’d like to explore?

If you’re ready to go full steam ahead with a solid color backdrop, sweet! Note that I can modify backdrops to suit a particular pantone color that’s in line with your brand. If full color is the route you choose, I am more than happy to suggest colors, patterns or prints to avoid during a shoot that could potentially clash or blend with our backdrop.

There is a lot of science behind the psychology of color so before you commit to any color, be it in your wardrobe or as part of our set, be sure to know what the colors your wearing say about yourself and your brand!

Meeting with new and potential clients is a bit like being matched with a new dance partner.  Whether you're from the old school or the 21st century school of dance, there's always some kinks to be worked out.  Stick with me as we two-step through this post...

When shooting with a new subject, there’s a get-to-know-you phase and the usual song and dance (pun intended) with many commonly asked questions. While the steps of the dance will vary depending on the partner, the rhythm, pace and product never change. My job is to keep time, gain your confidence and deliver a product worthy of the highest praise from any dancefloor critic!

In lead up to our initial meeting, I have listed the most commonly asked questions and their answers. Reviewing these will help you become a more confident dance partner. Although I promise not to force you, if busting your favorite moves in front of the camera is your jam, by all means let loose! It wouldn't be the first time my subject has gotten their groove on during a shoot. 

1. How long will it take? Time is certainly an important factor that’s considered during a shoot. Both your and my time is valuable and I strive to make the most of it. I won’t spill all my time-saving tips in this post but will assure you that as much preparation and set up will be done in advance of you arriving on set. While I can’t pinpoint an exact length of time for your shoot, expect to be with me for a minimum of 20 minutes for a headshot, longer if we’re shooting multiple angles or setups. So many factors are considered during a shoot including lighting, wardrobe, makeup, etc. I want to produce the best image for you so if that takes longer, all I ask for is some patience and a smile!

2. How should I look? I cover this topic at greater lengths in a previous blog entry but here’s the gist: Stick to clean clothes (this may require a trip to the dry cleaner or busting out your iron to press your favourite blouse or button up), tidy and clean hair, your go-to makeup and accessories. I usually have a bag of “tools” on set that can manage the common flyaway, shiny foreheads and the like. If you’re still unsure of how to present yourself, bring options! There's no harm in applying a fresh coat of lipstick or changing shirts at the last minute. 

3. I hate having my picture taken and I don’t have a good angle. Less of a question, more of a concern, but it’s one I hear on the regular. The first step? Harness your inner confidence! Next, rest assured because you DO have a good angle and I am bound and determined to discover it during our “dance”! I’m about to go Oprah on you for a second; if there’s something that inspires your authentic self, bring it. A favorite quote, a good luck charm, an inspiring song or playlist, crystals, sage… if it will help you relax in front of the lens, I’m game. During my years as a portrait photographer you’d be surprised at the things I’ve seen people bring to combat bad juju!

How to Pose for Headshots: Tips from a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

Portrait photography can be an intimidating concept for some subjects. Even the most confident people sometimes freeze up and forget how to act natural once the lights, camera, action sequence takes place. I’ve had some Ricky Bobby types on my set but it’s a challenge I am willing to rise to.  

Don’t fret! Within minutes of meeting, it’s my goal to break down those barriers and get to know the natural you. From there, it’s incumbent on me to capture your best self. The sooner you can expose yourself (figuratively speaking, of course), the quicker I can get that shot. Here are a few tips to help you lean into your vulnerability:

1. Power posing. Either before or during your shoot, strike a pose. No really, there’s something to be said about power poses and their ability to translate directly into increased confidence. There's even an entire TED Talk dedicated to the topic. 

2. Practice in the mirror. It’s not just Derek Zoolander who practices mugging for the camera and don’t worry about being perceived as vain if you do too. If you prefer the privacy of your home vs. the communal office bathroom, that’s cool too.

3. Flip through old photos. Take a trip down memory lane. Creep your own Facebook profile, seeking out the images you felt you looked your best. What made that special? Was it the moment, the lighting, your makeup, a pose, the color of your clothing? A combination of all of the above? Consider these elements before you arrive for your headshot and feel free to share your insights with me! I always appreciate it when a subject has done their homework and has an idea of what angles / poses / expressions suit their personality the best.

4. Music. Sometimes music helps loosen people up. I know that some of my best work is executed when set to the tunes of my favourite indie music. Have a request? Just call me DJ Liz.

A Pop of Personality in your Headshot? Tips from a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

Working with clients across various industries, I am sometimes asked if headshots can be both a reflection of the organization and the individual.  Depending on the vision of the organization and brand guidelines, there can certainly be room for both personal and professional expression in a corporate headshot. The key thing to remember is that this isn't a mugshot, it's a headshot! Big difference, people. 

Who would you rather do business with? Captain serious or Mr. Personality?!

Remember that when we shoot I’m also snapping so many frames of each individual that there is usually flexibility to experiment with expressions, props, etc. There is no such thing as a one take wonder, no matter how experienced you are in front of a camera. Even a makeup-free Gisele goes through multiple takes before getting that perfect shot. 

This shot? This was 8 minutes into our session and frame number 87!

As a professional portrait photographer, my job extends beyond lighting and framing. In fact, a huge part of my job is quickly developing a rapport with my subject, enough to make them comfortable in front of my lens. This doesn’t always translate as a perfectly poised and posed shot and that's ok. Sometimes the best headshots are snapped when the subject isn’t even aware I’m still shooting!

Photography is something that many people are passionate about. Some of the biggest changes in the photograph industry occurred when social media became a big thing. Since the world of social media has grown and evolved, the photography industry has experienced a few major shifts. Most of the effects that social media had on the industry were good and had positive effects towards photographers and their works. In the end, social media has opened the world of photography up to a lot of people. In fact, that is going to be our first of a few points that we are going to discuss regarding the ways that social media has changed the photography industry.

Brought photography to light

The first and one of the most important things to say about social media and its effect on photography is that it brought it into many peoples lives. Before social media, you had to physically search the internet or library for certain photographs or genres in order to see certain work. Now, if a piece is good, social media will work its wonders and soon everyone will have seen it. Social media is such a good thing for photography in the sense that it has increased exposure to record amounts. For that reason, the lasting impact that social media had on photography was a good one. The good thing about social media is that users do not care who, what, when, or where to photograph was taken. All that they care about is whether or not it looks good. If it does, people will like it and it will become popular. Because it is easier to have your works seen by many people, it allowed more and more people to have a career in photography. The next point that we are going to cover is how social media has influenced camera quality.

Crystal Clear cameras

Social media is where everyone wants to post the photographs that they take. In order to get as many likes or retweets on social media, the picture should be the highest camera quality possible. For that reason, one can assume that the public began to demand better cameras in order to take better pictures. Just as their demands were heard, they were met. Producers have since come out with better cameras and today, social media is one of the biggest hubs of high definition photography. Even cell phone have cameras on them with quite some intense capabilities.

Everyone wants to be a photographer

While some people have always liked taking pictures for their pleasure, a new wave of people has taken interest in photography for the sole purpose of posting on social media. When we say that everyone wants to be a photographer, it does not imply that everyone wants to consider a career in photography.

It is simply referring to the fact that tons of people are putting time and effort into their pictures so that they look better on social media. As more and more people are putting more time into their pictures, those with a natural talent are coming to light more often. Granted this issue has some points of contention. The barriers for entry have been lowered. If everyone is a photographer and can “take great photos” this can threaten professional photographers livelihoods. Why hire a professional photographer, when your iPhone takes great pictures. Luckily as those who rise to the top, they luckily want to “graduate” towards working with an actual camera and not their phone.

New filters

In social media, the extra colors or tints that are placed on top of pictures in order to make them look better are called filters. Since social media has become a thing, filters have become more and more advanced. Many people use the custom filters offered on the social media platform to edit their pictures. As this began happening, other app developers started to design new apps specifically used to edit photographs. All of that to say, social media drove the advancements of filtering and editing photographs before sharing them with the world.

Photography-driven social media platforms

A lot of social media platforms are actually photograph based. This means that when you post out to the world, you do so in the form of a picture. To put this into perspective, here is an example. Facebook and Twitter are social media platforms which users more commonly post out paragraphs or words rather than photographs. Other platforms like Instagram, VSCO, and Snapchat are entirely photograph-based. This goes hand in hand with the paragraph talking about everyone wanting to become a photographer. As soon as people begin posting fashionable looking pictures, everyone wants to replicate it and take their own pictures.

Selfies!

This article would not be complete had we not talked about the fact that social media made selfies a thing. Before social media, no one really ever thought to take a picture of themselves. Why would they? What would you do with a picture of yourself? While today, we see the answer to be obvious (post it on social media...duh), it was not as easy to grasp back in the day. So you see, once social media came into light, people began taking pictures of themselves so that they could show everyone what they look like up close and personal.

Social media has had a significant impact on photography and photographers. Thankfully, it is safe to see that it has changed the industry in a good way rather than bad. All in all, photography is more advanced than ever before.

Group Portraits Behind the Scenes: from a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

Group photography may seem like a walk in the park. Get everyone to look at the camera at the same time and then take the photo, and voila! Group photo! In reality it's not as easy as that. In this article I'll show you some before and after of how a group photo starts and ends.

Placement of your subjects if incredibly important when planning out a group photo. Height of each person, what they're wearing, and how they are sitting or standing lends to the over all final image. Annie Liebovitz and Art Streiber do excellent work with their group photos, however more often than not corporate group photos are rushed and subjects are not as experienced as the actors and models that these celebrity photographers do.

The way I succeed at creating and capturing corporate group photos is to be as prepared as possible. I pre scout the location with the company PR person so I know what light I've got and what I need to bring, as well as how large the room is. We talk about furniture and props that need to be removed and what can be brought in to enhance the photo. My team and I turn up to the location three hours before the load in and test light. Multiple rows of people mean that the lighting has to be incredibly exact otherwise you risk having shadow on the rows behind and out of focus photos. 

Once everything is set up I have each person come into the room one at a time and then sit and wait for the next person. We arrange subjects and take the photo as fast as possible. I photograph using a tripod as it is likely that I'll be needing to take heads from one photo and put them on another. Group photos NEVER have everyone looking correct at the same time. After the shoot I start the post production process often dropping in a background to account for the photo not being taken in a studio but in a hotel suite, or side conference room. And Ta da!!!! Group corporate photos!

Did you just make a major company announcement and not include photos? No for real!?! Are you serious. That is a definite faux pas if you want to have eyes and ears on your company. These days if there is no photo, then it didn’t happen. Companies like SparkPr that I’ve worked with in the past do an excellent job of making sure you have an impact.

How can you always make an impact with your press release? I’ve got some suggestions for you. How to choose your photographer - from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

“How to choose your photographer” is a topic that resonates with me, because so much of it comes down to expectations. If those expectations aren’t addressed upfront or addressed honestly, there’s a good chance both the photographer and the client will experience some dissatisfaction. Here are some tips for choosing the right photographer for your corporate headshots:

Know your needs

In my earlier posts I noted that if you want a corporate headshot that meets your needs, you need to go into your shoot knowing what your needs are. For example, perhaps you want to work primarily in black-and-white. Or, perhaps you want the option of having your photos heavily photo-shopped. Or, maybe you want someone that has a lot of experience working on location. Understanding this in advance of sourcing a photographer will help you source the right photographer.

Do your homework

Now that you know what your needs are, it’s time to spend a little time digging around the websites of the photographers you’re considering. Look at their portfolios. Ask for referrals. Speak with those referrals. Think about what it is that you like or don’t like about certain photos. Is the photographer’s style appealing to you, or do you find yourself primarily thinking “I wouldn’t want that for me”? If it’s consistently the latter, it might be time to move on.

Take time for a consultation

Whether it’s over a coffee or on the phone, I like to get to know my potential clients. This is because chemistry matters, and because I ultimately want them to feel comfortable working with me. A consultation can help you determine if you’re going to jive with your photographer, and if your personalities are a good fit. For example, if you’re on the quieter side, you may not work best with a boisterous, mile-a-minute talker. Sometimes, a 15-minute conversation can make a world of difference.

Talk Budget

It's important to talk with your photographer about budget. If you are looking for something special you may need special equipment, or special post production. It may not be much more to add those requests in, or any more at all but be sure to talk about your full budget for the project.

3 Reasons it's time for a new corporate headshot - From a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

While we've all wished it could at various points, time doesn’t stand still – which is why I’ve decided to share 3 reasons it’s time for a new corporate headshot. I know, I know. You’re probably rolling your eyes right now as you consider why it’s in a photographer’s self-interest to make this case. But what about your self-interest? How we present ourselves to the world, and the world’s perception of us, does matter. If it didn’t, you wouldn’t be getting a corporate headshot in the first place. So suspend your cynicism, and consider this:

 The 2-Year Itch

While it may seem frequent, corporate headshots should be updated every two years. In two years, our appearances can change quite a bit. Even if that change isn’t one you’re terribly happy about. I say this not to sound harsh, but because you want to look like your corporate headshot. Looking one way in a photo and another IRL will confuse people and distract from your business goals. It also may lead customers to think you’re insecure or lacking in self-confidence – and who wants that? Owning your look means owning your message.

There’s a Brand New You

Since your last corporate headshot, you’ve embraced a new hairstyle – one that you foresee sticking with for some time. Perhaps you’ve lost a lot of weight. Perhaps you’ve gained weight. As I mentioned above, perception matters. While you can never entirely control perception, being proactive about your corporate headshot and taking the reins will help you feel more empowered than if you left everything to chance. Rock your hairstyle. Revel in the new clothes that (hopefully!) have come with weight changes. Embrace it, don’t fight it.

You Want to Keep it Fresh

Do you want to convey that you’re busy and successful because you are? Then why have the same corporate headshots you’ve had for the last couple years? After all, you’re moving and shaking. Time has passed, styles change, sense of self and preferences have changed, etc. Updating your corporate headshot may put you back on people’s radars, which could mean new clients (or at the very least, new conversations with potential clients!)

I realize planning for a new corporate headshot may sound like a headache. But if you’ve done it before, chances are you know what you want – and therefore can get what you need (see last week’s blog for more on that). Just remember, a little effort upfront will pay off in dividends.

Get the right headshots for your needs (Part 3 of 3) - From a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

In last week’s blog, we explored additional steps one should take in order to get the right corporate headshots for his or her needs. While this blog marks the last of my 3-part series, you can expect future blogs to include more tips and tricks relevant to this topic – especially as the photography field continues to evolve and styles fall in and out of fashion. On that note, let’s get to it:

Time is of the Essence

While it sounds obvious, I can’t stress it enough: make sure to give yourself or your team enough time to have their photos taken. When considering timing, you need to factor in any travel to the corporate headshot location, last minute prep (makeup touch-ups, etc.), settling in for the photograph following feedback from the photographer, the actual photography session, and then time spent considering which photographs are your favorite. I counsel building in a minimum of 30 minutes.

When Necessary, Prep your Team

If you’ve set up the photography session for your team, chances are you’ve corresponded with your photographer a few times and have a sense of basic corporate headshot does and don’ts. My advice? Impart your learned wisdom to your team in advance of the session. For example, your team should have a sense of appropriate clothing to wear for the shoot, i.e. wearing white against white will yield a floating head, as will black against black.

Be Decisive Now

The term “fix it in post-production” is used far too frequently, as it seems to indicate there’s a certain ease in making dramatic changes to corporate headshots. While there is a time and a place for post production, it’s not the place for, say, changing a photo from black and white to color. In fact, this type of lighting adjustment isn’t really possible. To avoid this headache, the best course of action is to know if you want black and white versus color in advance. Then, make sure to actually convey this to your photographer! Lighting is different for black and white, and your photographer will need to make adjustments to account for contrasts, shadows and highlights.

Why Not to Use a Selfie as Your Headshot – from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer 

Don’t let the title of this blog fool you. I’m not about to embark on a blanket anti-selfie rant or make dramatic claims about the “death of photography”. Selfies can be fun, casual, and offer an avenue for self-expression. For better or worse, they’re part of our modern culture.

Nevertheless, I do believe there’s a time and place for selfies…and that place isn’t your professional headshot. Here are a few reasons why:

The Quality Factor

When it comes to photo quality, our smartphones have come a long, long way. But, their pixel prowess shouldn’t be overestimated: selfies do not scale well for platforms that matter, such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and corporate websites. What makes for a sleek and shiny Instagram photo can also make for a grainy, blurry and out-of-focus LinkedIn headshot.  

The Background Factor

The selfies I see in my line of work, and in general, often include random backgrounds. Backgrounds can be distracting and may not fit what is conventional or traditional for headshots. While images taken from the front seat of your car, your road bike or an outdoor brewery are great for Facebook or Snapchat, they don’t exactly project gravitas. There are more appropriate options – some of which I expand on here.

The Professionalism Factor

Simply put, selfies are divisive. They engender both positive and negative reactions from people, especially when factoring in generational, cultural, and demographic differences. For every potential client that views your headshot selfie as chic, glamourous, and daring, another thinks it indicates you’re self-involved, lazy, and cheap. We’re not at the point where the selfie is universally beloved and accepted, so why push it? Ultimately, you want your talent and reputation to speak for itself, as opposed to a photo style that invites snap judgments.

Look at these great photos of fun times. Just not great for your headshot!!

My clients get professional headshots because they want to attract the professional clientele they deserve and desire. If you’re reading this blog, I imagine that’s a goal you identify with. Do yourself a favor, keep it classy, and say “no” to the selfie headshot. I promise you’ll find other place for that killer shot with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

Stock photos permeate our web experience today. Websites, PDF downloads, and all those marketing one-pagers are filled to the brim with the classic business man, woman on a conference call, and generic product shots. And while there's no question they have a role to play, when it's time to tell your story, don't settle for someone else's photos.

Consider this the next time you're thinking about zooming over to iStock instead of ringing a local photographer:

• Stock photos don't showcase your product. Generic by nature, you'll be relying on the viewer to fill in real details with their imagination.

• Stock photography can't capture the exact emotion you're looking to convey. A photo will always illicit an emotional response from viewers - but with your own photography, you're in control of that feeling.

• Stock photo sites come with limits on size and usage. This is especially important for any marketing or sales materials - and is something you can stipulate up front when you work directly with a photographer.

• Using stock photography means searching and sifting through hundreds or thousands of options. Not only is this time consuming and potentially frustrating, when you work with a photographer you end up with photos you would not have thought of, often with fantastic results.

Ultimately it comes down to control. Stock photos have their place, but you cede ownership of vital creative parts of the process to keyword searches of vast, generic collections of photos. Opting for a photographer for your next project means you can focus on the message and the emotion you want to convey, and you control the outcome.
