Photos for the executives or the whole team - from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

So you're ready for new headshots. It has been a while since they've been done. You have new hires, new execs and all around more people. Now the question is, do you continue and do photos just for the executives or do you do photos for the whole team?

The executives on the whole have many speaking engagements, and public appearances that they would need to have their faces seen. In fact it's entirely likely that you'd want to have a headshot that is reflective of your corporate brand and a second headshot that is against a white or light grey background that can be multipurpose. I highly recommend doing a photoshoot with two looks so that you are able to be versatile.

Now, does the rest of the company need to have their photos done since the executives are the face of the company to the outside world? How will this benefit the company as a whole to have everyone's photo taken. If the whole company isn't being seen then why bother. Here's a few reasons why you would want to take those photos.

1. Company Moral is a big deal, and if you can make people feel like they are worthwhile in the company photos is one easy way to accomplish it. Making everyone to feel included is also important.

2. Company Re-org. Yup, People don’t always stay in the same position. They move on to other companies, other divisions leaving spaces for team members to move up. Why not take the opportunity to refresh the whole company at once than doing a photoshoot for that one person who’s now an exec. If you did everyone you would already have the photo.

3. Opportunity for group photos. Since people are going to be in the office for their photo, why not do a group photo. You can print and hang this on the wall or email it out to everyone as unity of all the teams. The holiday party does not have to be the only time people get their photos taken as a group.

So, there you have it. I say, do the whole company. You never know what opportunity you’ll need the photos for and it’s just great to have a professional catalog of everyone who works at the company.

For a hot minute I debated titling this entry “The Prince of Prints” because, who doesn’t love a good wordplay?! For simplicity’s sake, I stuck with the “King of Prints” but whatever royalty you identify with, the knowledge I’m dropping today is for everyone.

Putting pixels on paper can be a daunting task. You’ve gone through pre-shoot prep, I’ve taken dozens if not, hundreds of shots, pored over them in post-production and presented you with the cream of the crop. I rise to the top… sorry, I couldn’t resist the reference!

What you’re left with is deciding which images to print and where to put them. We discussed digital applications of headshots in a previous post and while that’s essential, printing your images is equally as important. Perhaps you want to create a sense of arrival in your lobby or reception area? Maybe your business has a coffee table style album full of prints of your current roster of employees? Do you include headshots on your business cards? What about your advertising channels for recruitment purposes? Maybe it’s time for a company directory refresh. Whatever the objective, images will be shot with high enough resolution that will enable you to enlarge prints to meet your needs.

My biggest advice when it comes to printing photos is that you do it as soon as you receive the digital files. With a solid plan developed ahead of time and suppliers in place awaiting your order, you’ll be the King or Queen of Prints in no time!

Meeting with new and potential clients is a bit like being matched with a new dance partner.  Whether you're from the old school or the 21st century school of dance, there's always some kinks to be worked out.  Stick with me as we two-step through this post...

When shooting with a new subject, there’s a get-to-know-you phase and the usual song and dance (pun intended) with many commonly asked questions. While the steps of the dance will vary depending on the partner, the rhythm, pace and product never change. My job is to keep time, gain your confidence and deliver a product worthy of the highest praise from any dancefloor critic!

In lead up to our initial meeting, I have listed the most commonly asked questions and their answers. Reviewing these will help you become a more confident dance partner. Although I promise not to force you, if busting your favorite moves in front of the camera is your jam, by all means let loose! It wouldn't be the first time my subject has gotten their groove on during a shoot. 

1. How long will it take? Time is certainly an important factor that’s considered during a shoot. Both your and my time is valuable and I strive to make the most of it. I won’t spill all my time-saving tips in this post but will assure you that as much preparation and set up will be done in advance of you arriving on set. While I can’t pinpoint an exact length of time for your shoot, expect to be with me for a minimum of 20 minutes for a headshot, longer if we’re shooting multiple angles or setups. So many factors are considered during a shoot including lighting, wardrobe, makeup, etc. I want to produce the best image for you so if that takes longer, all I ask for is some patience and a smile!

2. How should I look? I cover this topic at greater lengths in a previous blog entry but here’s the gist: Stick to clean clothes (this may require a trip to the dry cleaner or busting out your iron to press your favourite blouse or button up), tidy and clean hair, your go-to makeup and accessories. I usually have a bag of “tools” on set that can manage the common flyaway, shiny foreheads and the like. If you’re still unsure of how to present yourself, bring options! There's no harm in applying a fresh coat of lipstick or changing shirts at the last minute. 

3. I hate having my picture taken and I don’t have a good angle. Less of a question, more of a concern, but it’s one I hear on the regular. The first step? Harness your inner confidence! Next, rest assured because you DO have a good angle and I am bound and determined to discover it during our “dance”! I’m about to go Oprah on you for a second; if there’s something that inspires your authentic self, bring it. A favorite quote, a good luck charm, an inspiring song or playlist, crystals, sage… if it will help you relax in front of the lens, I’m game. During my years as a portrait photographer you’d be surprised at the things I’ve seen people bring to combat bad juju!

Hands up if you have worked with colleagues / suppliers / clients that you correspond with exclusively via conference call / email / phone because of your geographic differences. Keep them up if you’ve always pictured Jenny from Accounting in Arizona to be in her early twenties, just starting her career, only to be proven completely wrong when you meet in person. Jenny is in fact 3 years from retirement and just happens to sound young. Sound familiar?

Corporate headshots help employees in your organization connect with one another by putting a face to the name. Consistency among organizational headshots are not just for vanity’s sake. Putting a face to the name before you connect with a new colleague / supplier / client via phone / teleconference / email can go a long way in establishing a good working relationship.

Standardization across an organization for headshots is equally important. Sorry Stan in IT, you can no longer use an image of The Hulk as your avatar on Slack. Lucy in Operations? Ixnay on the Lucille Ball alias.

Communication has evolved in the corporate world and so to, should the professional image you portray. With phone systems wired through computers, many organizations utilize technology that populates a contact card, headshot included, on the screen of the receiver, meaning Joe can now see Jane before he hears her! Similarly, most organizations rely on internal instant messaging tools, whether it’s slack, sametime or sharepoint; these tools for effective communication are made even more effective when professional headshots are included in employee profiles.

Displaying photos taken for security badges or ID are never the best or most accurate representation of the employee and should not be used in these instances. If you haven't been to the Piece x Piece website in a while, you are in for a treat. Elizabeth Brunner has created an entirely new line of apparel and home goods. These stunning pieces are all hand created using natural dyes. Be sure to click the links above to see her newest work. I had the opportunity to photograph Elizabeth a few years back for SOMA magazine. Check here to read the original article. It was then I came to her studio for a tour and got to see how she works.

Everything at the studio is organized beautifully and is flooded with beautiful eastern light looking over the San Francisco Bay. At this time she was creating garments that were made PiecexPiece of remains from other designers and putting them together in her own amazing one of a kind creations. Her goal has always been to be sustainable and use what we already have, to be kind to the environment, and make a peaceful space for the future.

I love Mighty!! They are a group of the coolest women out there in PR. They are constantly striving to give their clients the best that they can and I'm so happy every time I get to work with them.

Rebecca Fuller, Candace Locklear and June Parina have such strong chops for the San Francisco Bay Area it's unreal. I had the opportunity to work with them on a project photographing a Venture Capital company DCM. The photoshoot was of their full team and they had all flown in from China for a conference and had 20 minutes to pop out for their photos. I brought with me two photo assistants, and a hair and make up artist to be able to make sure the photos were fantastic. The shoot was in one of the suites in The St. Regis Hotel. I went to the hotel the week before and did a full site survey for the 17 person photoshoot. We brought in furniture from around the hotel, moved out furniture and set up the suite like a photo studio. During post production we dropped in a background so that everything behind the subjects was smooth and clean. The end result was fantastic. Everyone in the photos look great I was really happy with the client and the experience with Mighty.

When Index Ventures approached me to created headshots for their venture capital, I jumped at the opportunity to create a custom look just for them. If you know what a venture capital company is you know that Index Ventures is big time. Like for real big time so much so that they're referenced in the hit HBO tv show Silicon Valley as the litmus for Venture Capital. They represent companies such as ASOS, Blue Bottle Coffee, Zendesk, Skype, and Squarespace.

So needless to say it was really important to get it right. They wanted to have a light, friendly, approachable look. Not stuffy, not corporate, not buttoned up at all. We had several chats about the direction to go and decided that photographing in their offices would capture them at work but also show them how they were. Looking directly at camera would break the fourth wall and they wanted to keep the feel of casual. Of course like every executive I photograph there is a very small window to take photos. When I was at their offices I had a few short minutes to set up lighting at their offices, take their photo then I had to clear out and wait for the next executive to be ready to be photographed. It was definitely very exciting to be ready to just jump right in, but it also meant that I had to be on my game as there was natural light, and artificial light that needed to be balanced as well as ensuring my subjects were at ease.

Index Ventures were incredibly happy with the result and have used the images for years all over their site and blog.

If you've read my blog before you've seen me write about Venture Capital and Start Ups. This post is a little different. So many companies go with the standard white background or light grey. Why? It's so so so corporate. Venture Capitalists and Start Ups want to be anything but corporate. Luckily there are many ways to steer clear of that look and one of them is using colorful background paper and colorful clothing.

If you can think of a background color I can provide that for you. But more so, a colorful background is an opportunity to be more playful in your photos. To break from the mold and show your team's personality and style. It is also an opportunity to show your company's branding color. Or why don't do multiple colors.

I'm sure you have that shy and timid employee at your company and what better way to help them break out of their shell than have something fun for them. Or even better help that person who is already outgoing to have even more fun and be excited by the fact that you know how to represent your company in a really cool way.

Why not take a leap and have your team do colorful headshots this time around and update your entire website!!!

Why you always need to grey card - from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

Ever wonder why I always have an assistant pop one of those little rectangular color charts in front of you before we photograph? It's for white balance. Yep. Seems odd. The whole concept is complicated but essentially you need to have a the true version of the color under the lighting that you will be using as a test photo. Below are examples of my assistants having a blast and making silly faces and mugging while holding the chart.

The chart that I use is the MacBeth Color Checker. Today they go for about $80 on Amazon, B&H and Adorama. I first used this chart when I worked on tv shows and movies and still use it today. Of course I have bought several new ones as if it wears out, the color is no longer accurate.

Here's how you use the thing. You take a photo with the chart under the subject's face (ie. most important part of your photo). Then you start taking your photos as normal. If you change your lighting during the shoot you need to do another chart so that you ensure the color is accurate. When you bring the photos into post production you will reference this chart and click on the middle grey color with your white balance tool to adjust the photo so it is accurate. It is especially important to use this chart when photographing portraits outside as the color temperature changes when it's cloudy, to sunny, to half sunny and half cloudy. It is your best tool to ensure you have the best photos you can. Without this tool you are just winging it and that really is not professional.

You can also buy a smaller version of this chart to put on a lanyard and it comes in white, grey and black and is the x-rite version. This is great for situations when the sun and clouds are constantly changing.

How to choose your photographer - from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

“How to choose your photographer” is a topic that resonates with me, because so much of it comes down to expectations. If those expectations aren’t addressed upfront or addressed honestly, there’s a good chance both the photographer and the client will experience some dissatisfaction. Here are some tips for choosing the right photographer for your corporate headshots:

Know your needs

In my earlier posts I noted that if you want a corporate headshot that meets your needs, you need to go into your shoot knowing what your needs are. For example, perhaps you want to work primarily in black-and-white. Or, perhaps you want the option of having your photos heavily photo-shopped. Or, maybe you want someone that has a lot of experience working on location. Understanding this in advance of sourcing a photographer will help you source the right photographer.

Do your homework

Now that you know what your needs are, it’s time to spend a little time digging around the websites of the photographers you’re considering. Look at their portfolios. Ask for referrals. Speak with those referrals. Think about what it is that you like or don’t like about certain photos. Is the photographer’s style appealing to you, or do you find yourself primarily thinking “I wouldn’t want that for me”? If it’s consistently the latter, it might be time to move on.

Take time for a consultation

Whether it’s over a coffee or on the phone, I like to get to know my potential clients. This is because chemistry matters, and because I ultimately want them to feel comfortable working with me. A consultation can help you determine if you’re going to jive with your photographer, and if your personalities are a good fit. For example, if you’re on the quieter side, you may not work best with a boisterous, mile-a-minute talker. Sometimes, a 15-minute conversation can make a world of difference.

Talk Budget

It's important to talk with your photographer about budget. If you are looking for something special you may need special equipment, or special post production. It may not be much more to add those requests in, or any more at all but be sure to talk about your full budget for the project.

One of the less obvious aspects of my work that I pride myself on is my organizational skills. A shoot is only as smooth as the photographer is prepared and that includes communication with the client in lead to the shoot day. I like to ensure that every detail is considered, no matter how minor. This means that I can focus on the criteria that controls the image quality during the day of our shoot. Here are some things to consider when scheduling a corporate headshot photoshoot that will help articulate your goals and give me the tools required to ensure your shoot is a smooth success!

• What is your end game? How you plan to use your images (print, digital, portrait, landscape, etc) will help me better prepare.

• How many headshots are we capturing? Creating a schedule in advance is something I can help with and will assist greatly in the planning process.

• What are your brand guidelines? This gives me a better understanding of the overall look and feel of your organization and whether there are certain colours or framing I should avoid.

Sometimes there are variables that are out of our control: weather, equipment malfunction, unexpected delays. Rest assured that I have contingency plans for almost any situation and work well under pressure!

A quality finished product is my goal, whatever the road to get there looks like!

When you hear the phrase “location, location, location…” what comes to mind? For a top corporate headshot photographer, I can tell you the logistics that come into play when a client requests to shoot outdoors. Topping that list are weather and permits. Even the best laid plans can be foiled by a breeze and living and working in the microclimates that exist in San Francisco add some extra spice to the mix.

Don’t fear. Shooting your corporate headshot outdoors is possible! It is made even better when the client has some flexibility and a contingency plan, both of which I am happy to help guide you with.

“Hey Mother Nature! I’m going to need you to tone down the wind for a minute!”

With seventeen years in the photography business I've faced every weather pattern possible.  Come wind, cold, rain or even snow, it was my job to capture a magical moment in some of the toughest conditions. Natural elements are a normal consideration when shooting outdoors and it is amazing what can be achieved.

If an outdoor setting is what best represents your brand or organization, consider several locations, access to these places and whether they are public or private property. Seeking a soft, dusky glow in your portraits? Be mindful that it may take several sessions to capture your entire team as natural light, while beautiful, is fleeting and requires a level of efficiency and expertise.

I am experienced and familiar with many natural settings that are ideal for shooting in and around the San Francisco Bay Area so feel free to leave the location scouting in my hands.

The question of whether to smile using teeth during a corporate photo shoot is one that comes up consistently, so I figured I would blog about it and put your questions at ease. Unless you have had modelling experience, many people are unfamiliar with the way their image is portrayed when captured professionally. My job is to capture the best, most natural version of yourself and here’s how you can help. This is not a post telling you to go to the dentist, though I highly recommend mine Dr. Aja Hall. Today I'm sharing how to look your best, most natural, and confident.

Are you normally someone who sports a toothy grin? Do you feel confident when your teeth are exposed? Or are you someone who prefers a sly grin? Do you have dimples that are exposed when you smile? Do your eyes naturally close or do you squint when you smile? Familiarize yourself with your smile and the way it manipulates your face by practising in the mirror before your shoot. Some people have fine lines or wrinkles that are emphasized by a bigger smile, or a double chin that reveals itself when smiling a certain way. Knowing these things about your own smile will help our shoot to go smoothly.

Sometimes the best smiles are revealed mid-laugh, so if you’re feeling nervous on the day of your shoot, prepare some mental jokes that will loosen you up or suffer through my attempts at comedy (hint: it’s pretty cheesey!).

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong approach. This isn’t a passport photo or mugshot, so have some fun, loosen up and bare those pearly whites (or don’t - it’s your call)!

With the dawn of each new year comes an overwhelming mental list of to-do’s or at least, to-do-more-of’s (exercise, practise gratitude, meditate) or maybe, to-do-less-of’s (complain, consume, criticize). While re-starting an old exercise routine that fell off the rails before the holidays or cracking the spine of your brand new gratitude journal are worthy goals, have you considered adding a new headshot to the list? 1. “New Year, New Me”: this new school adage actually bears more weight than its words. So many of us focus on appearance-based goals in the hopes of improving upon our previous year’s selves. Why not use a new headshot to set the tone for the new year? A refresher headshot each January is prime time to update your image, along with your list of personal and professional goals for the coming year.

2. Page one of 365: The analogy that a year is like a book and you have 365 days to narrate your story is an intriguing one. If January is chapter one, how do you want to start the story? Using a fresh new image to guide the next dozen chapters is a great way to begin. Let your achievements, milestones and even struggles be the cornerstones of your book in 2018.

3. Update your yearbook: Are yearly headshots really necessary? Yes! Do you really think Sally’s headshot from 1997 is reflecting her current best self? Or that the transition lenses Allan is sporting in his headshot are portraying his best self? Consider your company roster like a class. Capturing annual headshots of your team is essential. This not only keeps a consistent look and feel among all headshots but provides an opportunity to showcase new personnel as well. Take it from a professional, transition lenses are never a good idea for portraits!

3 Reasons it's time for a new corporate headshot - From a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

While we've all wished it could at various points, time doesn’t stand still – which is why I’ve decided to share 3 reasons it’s time for a new corporate headshot. I know, I know. You’re probably rolling your eyes right now as you consider why it’s in a photographer’s self-interest to make this case. But what about your self-interest? How we present ourselves to the world, and the world’s perception of us, does matter. If it didn’t, you wouldn’t be getting a corporate headshot in the first place. So suspend your cynicism, and consider this:

 The 2-Year Itch

While it may seem frequent, corporate headshots should be updated every two years. In two years, our appearances can change quite a bit. Even if that change isn’t one you’re terribly happy about. I say this not to sound harsh, but because you want to look like your corporate headshot. Looking one way in a photo and another IRL will confuse people and distract from your business goals. It also may lead customers to think you’re insecure or lacking in self-confidence – and who wants that? Owning your look means owning your message.

There’s a Brand New You

Since your last corporate headshot, you’ve embraced a new hairstyle – one that you foresee sticking with for some time. Perhaps you’ve lost a lot of weight. Perhaps you’ve gained weight. As I mentioned above, perception matters. While you can never entirely control perception, being proactive about your corporate headshot and taking the reins will help you feel more empowered than if you left everything to chance. Rock your hairstyle. Revel in the new clothes that (hopefully!) have come with weight changes. Embrace it, don’t fight it.

You Want to Keep it Fresh

Do you want to convey that you’re busy and successful because you are? Then why have the same corporate headshots you’ve had for the last couple years? After all, you’re moving and shaking. Time has passed, styles change, sense of self and preferences have changed, etc. Updating your corporate headshot may put you back on people’s radars, which could mean new clients (or at the very least, new conversations with potential clients!)

I realize planning for a new corporate headshot may sound like a headache. But if you’ve done it before, chances are you know what you want – and therefore can get what you need (see last week’s blog for more on that). Just remember, a little effort upfront will pay off in dividends.

Get the right headshots for your needs (Part 3 of 3) - From a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

In last week’s blog, we explored additional steps one should take in order to get the right corporate headshots for his or her needs. While this blog marks the last of my 3-part series, you can expect future blogs to include more tips and tricks relevant to this topic – especially as the photography field continues to evolve and styles fall in and out of fashion. On that note, let’s get to it:

Time is of the Essence

While it sounds obvious, I can’t stress it enough: make sure to give yourself or your team enough time to have their photos taken. When considering timing, you need to factor in any travel to the corporate headshot location, last minute prep (makeup touch-ups, etc.), settling in for the photograph following feedback from the photographer, the actual photography session, and then time spent considering which photographs are your favorite. I counsel building in a minimum of 30 minutes.

When Necessary, Prep your Team

If you’ve set up the photography session for your team, chances are you’ve corresponded with your photographer a few times and have a sense of basic corporate headshot does and don’ts. My advice? Impart your learned wisdom to your team in advance of the session. For example, your team should have a sense of appropriate clothing to wear for the shoot, i.e. wearing white against white will yield a floating head, as will black against black.

Be Decisive Now

The term “fix it in post-production” is used far too frequently, as it seems to indicate there’s a certain ease in making dramatic changes to corporate headshots. While there is a time and a place for post production, it’s not the place for, say, changing a photo from black and white to color. In fact, this type of lighting adjustment isn’t really possible. To avoid this headache, the best course of action is to know if you want black and white versus color in advance. Then, make sure to actually convey this to your photographer! Lighting is different for black and white, and your photographer will need to make adjustments to account for contrasts, shadows and highlights.

Get the right headshots for your needs (Part 2 of 3) - From a Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

In last week’s post, I wrote about some considerations to keep in mind if you want to get the right corporate headshot for your needs and come away from your session satisfied with the outcome. Because there is no shortage of topics related to this issue, I’m continuing here. I chose to write about this because it is so important for the photographer and subject to come to a mutual understanding about expectations.

I’ll kick off with one of the easiest, most productive ways to accomplish this:

Communicate with your Photographer

This one is a no-brainer. A killer corporate headshot doesn’t happen in a vacuum, nor can the photographer pull it out of a hat. If you want to see your “vision” come to fruition, you need to spend time talking with your photographer to make sure she can accomplish your goals. Ahead of corporate headshot sessions, I’ll typically send my clients an email about how they can prepare for the shoot. That list includes recommendations for grooming and clothing. While this certainly helps us both, the most successful shoots I’ve done generally resulted from having conversations that went beyond an emailed list.

Location, Location, Location…

Consider where it makes the most sense to do your shoot. Is it your office or somewhere else? While you may be inclined to default to your office, consider if it’s the right size and ensure there aren’t too many distractions in the way. This is especially important if you’re looking for multiple photos taken at various angles (standing, sitting, walking, etc.). For example, a location that involves something like a big, unmovable conference table generally isn’t a good idea, because shooting around it is impossible.

…Because Location also Influences Setups

If you’re intent on getting numerous shots from various angles, chances are you’re also interested in varying up your background. For example, perhaps you’re envisioning a few photos with a white background and a few taken outdoors. This isn’t uncommon, and it can be done – provided you’re realistic about what you have to work with. Location limitations may require several shoots over several days. This is especially important to consider if you’re working under time constraints.

Those are the themes, folks: communication, location, setup. Putting just a little thought into each component is well-worth it (and speaking of themes, “thought” is clearly one of them when it comes to corporate headshot needs!) When it comes to getting the right corporate headshots for your needs, there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all option. Of course, there are steps you can take to be corporate headshot-ready, but the result often varies client-by-client and depending on your needs. Needs are an important factor with corporate headshots. For example, if you hold a creative role with a trendy advertising agency, you probably don’t want to end up with a corporate headshot that makes you look stiff, formal, and stern.

If you want a corporate headshot that meets your needs, you need to go into your shot knowing what your needs are. There are a number of questions you should ask, variables to consider, and qualifications to keep in mind. In this post (part 1 of 3), I briefly touch on 3 topics:

Identify the Photo’s Purpose

Where do you plan to use your corporate headshot? Will you post it on your website? As a LinkedIn profile? As a Twitter profile? On your blog? At a conference? While this may seem like an obvious question, you’d be surprised about how many people don’t think this through.

Will the Photo (Literally) Fit?

The previous question matters, because how you answer them will influence your corporate headshot’s dimensions, the angle, whether or not to zoom in or zoom out a bit, etc. Ultimately, you’re in need of a photo with the correct orientation and size for the platform you’re working with.

Look Right for the Occasion

Depending on where the photo will end up, you also need to consider your setting. Should you shoot indoors? Perhaps, if you are the CEO of an outdoor sports gear company. Indoors? Most likely, if you head up product development for a major global firm. Do you want the picture taken in your office or in a studio? In color or in black and white?

The more you understand your needs, the more likely you are to get what you want from your photographer. Do yourself a favor and think things through.
